If you have a major bed bug infestation, it’s likely obvious. But more minor infestations can be tough to detect. Many people mistake other bugs for bed bugs, and bites on the skin are not always a good indication. Bed bug bites can look like mosquito or other bug bites, skin rashes and eczema, and even hives.
If you do find them, your No. 1 priority will be to get rid of bed bugs.
Identifying bed bugs Bed bugs — scientific name Cimex lectularius — are about the size of an apple seed. When they haven’t recently fed on blood, they are a brown color, and flat and oval shaped. After feeding, they are longer, more bulbous and reddish-brown in color. Young bed bugs, called nymphs, are very difficult to see, being translucent or whitish-yellow in color. Bed bugs are smelly, with a musty-sweet scent produced by glands on the underside of their body.
Looking for signs of bed bugs Perhaps the best way to spot bed bugs is after they’ve been crushed in your sheets. They leave a rust-colored stain, and may even leave blood on the sheets. You can also look for eggs and eggshells, which are tiny, with pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
Where bed bugs hide Because bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can hide in extremely narrow, small places and during an infestation, they can be found in a variety of places. Around the bed, they can be found near the piping, in seams and tags of the mattress and box spring, and in cracks on the bed frame and headboard.
- If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs:
- In the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains.
- In drawer joints.
- In electrical receptacles and appliances.
- Under loose wallpaper and wall hangings.
- At the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet.
- In the head of a screw.
