Summer is a wonderful time of the year. The weather is warm and pleasant; the kids are out of school and enjoying summer activities; and many families are able to replace the daily grind with a much needed vacation. But, there’s one thing you should be sure to keep an eye on this while you’re enjoying your summer- bug infestations.
Just like us, summer pests love warm weather so, when temperatures rise, so do insect population numbers. While some summer bugs are completely harmless (like fireflies, ladybugs, cicadas, etc.) there are a few others that you should keep your eyes on. In the event that you see any of the following insects, whether alone or in swarms, you may want to give us a call.
Two specific types of ant that are popular during summer months are fire ants and crazy ants. Crazy ants are extremely attracted to the electronic systems of residential dwellings and can even chew through wiring in circuit boxes and throughout your home. There have even been reports of blackouts happening in Texas and other Southern states due to chewing habits of these insects. Fire ants on the other hand are much more prevalent throughout the United States and pose a physical threat to humans. If you encounter a swarm of fire ants, it’s recommended to run away while brushing off as many of them as possible. Additionally, insect repellent can help reduce encounters with either ant species, but your best bet is a residential ant treatment from Platinum Pest.
Ticks found in Northeastern states are known to carry Lyme disease, but did you know these insects may also be vectors for another dangerous parasite known as babesiosis? This malicious parasite infects the red blood cells and can cause severe, sometimes deadly symptoms including fever, muscle cramps, headaches and anemia. While babesiosis is still relatively rare, most experts feel its presence is on the rise. The best way to avoid a tick bite is to shy away from areas with heavy tick populations, keep covered, wear insect repellent and do a thorough body check upon returning from an infested area.
We couldn’t possibly have a list of summer insects to watch out for without including the infamous mosquito. Especially as research and concern continues to rise about Zika virus, this summer it is essential to think about mosquito control. We don’t have to tell you how dangerous mosquito-borne illness can be (we’ll let the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do that) but we can tell you how you can help stop their progression. By choosing the Platinum Seasonal Mosquito Control package, you receive a monthly service starting during peak mosquito breeding season. Our highly trained mosquito control professionals will target and treat common nesting areas throughout your property, with an environmentally, kid and pet friendly service.
